Why this form.
Ferrochel® is a patented iron bisglycinate chelate manufactured by Albion Minerals. Unlike commodity ferrous sulfate, Ferrochel® binds iron to two glycine molecules, creating a chelate that absorbs through amino acid transport pathways rather than the standard iron absorption channels in the gut. This is particularly significant because an estimated one in three people struggle to absorb iron orally due to gut microbiome damage — a finding highlighted in a February 2026 Telegraph investigation by Ella Nunn. Ferrochel® has been the subject of over 100 published studies and is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA.
Iron bisglycinate chelate demonstrates 2–4x higher absorption rates compared to ferrous sulfate in clinical studies. The chelated structure protects the iron through the stomach’s acidic environment and delivers it intact to the intestinal absorption sites. Vitamin C further enhances absorption by reducing ferric iron (Fe³⁺) to the more absorbable ferrous form (Fe²⁺).
Key Benefits
Research highlights.
Superior Absorption vs. Ferrous Sulfate
Ferrochel® demonstrated 2.6x higher absorption than ferrous sulfate in a randomized, double-blind study of iron-deficient women.
Szarfarc et al., 2001 — Archivos Latinoamericanos de NutriciónReduced GI Side Effects
Iron bisglycinate chelate produced significantly fewer gastrointestinal side effects (nausea, constipation, stomach pain) compared to ferrous sulfate at equivalent elemental iron doses.
Coplin et al., 1991 — Journal of Women’s HealthGut Microbiome & Iron Absorption
An estimated one in three people cannot absorb iron orally due to damaged gut microbiome. Chelated forms that use amino acid transport pathways may bypass this limitation.
